Senate candidate Bob Krause Applauds President Obama's Tougher Stance on Chinese Trade and Espionage
- February 05, 2010

Bob Krause, Democratic Candidate for the U. S. Senate, today applauded President Obama's tougher stance on Chinese trade and espionage, as announced before the U. S. Senate Democratic Caucus on Wednesday. Krause cited both the massive Chinese hacker assault in recent days on the State of Iowa and on the Google Corporation's security system. Citing the two events as proof of an incipient crisis, Krause then called on Obama and Congress to immediately revise international trade and defense policies with China. His complete statement follows:

"On the campaign trail, I have been making trade with China an issue because of national defense problems as well as the outsourcing of American jobs. One of the goals of Chinese intrusion into Google, according to various sources, was to create an entry to check on what military personnel are "googling" on Google. This has tremendous ramifications. As in civilian life, the use of Google to research every military question is pervasive."

"If you know what officer or what military office is "googling" what, then you likely know what is being planned and studied, and what will eventually go into the operations stream. Since the military intelligence is actually gathered from Google, which is an authorized entry point on many military systems -- and not from inside the military firewall -- there is no way to track the spying or even be aware that it is occurring. China cannot do this and continue to have productive relationships with the United States."

"Since last May, I have been concerned about outsourcing - especially to China - because it is undermining our national defense while destroying American jobs. I have also discussed the need to change trade policies concerning defense because the Chinese military had used chip factories in China to encrypt computer chips that were later widely installed in U.S. military equipment. I continue to be concerned that one in every four U.S. jobs in existence today is subject to international outsourcing -- many of them to China."

"America needs a long-term forward looking posture in jobs. For a jobs strategic plan, we need to shift our international focus by rapidly identifying areas where we need to put trade firewalls to protect our nation. Goods produced in China for U. S. consumption often contribute excessively to the production of greenhouse gases, and continue the undertow of job outsourcing that prevents unemployed Americans from finding jobs. We need to be responsible for our own self-interest because, surely, no one else has that in mind."
