Bob Krause, Democratic candidate for the U. S. Senate in Iowa, said today that the United States needs to severely restrict free trade in computer chips from China and conduct a crash program to bring chip manufacturing back to the United States.
Citing recent news articles quoting Office of National Counterintelligence Executive Joel Brenner, U. S. Senate candidate Bob Krause today urged the U. S. to severely restrict free trade in computer chips from China and to begin a crash program to restore chip manufacturing in the U S.
"Dr. Brenner is widely respected within the intelligence community. From his position, If Dr. Brenner states that Chinese computer chips are pervasive in U.S. military equipment, and they have been sabotaged to some degree, then they are. The implications of this could be the death knell for literally thousands of American service members if there were ever to be a war with China over Taiwan and the Formosa Straits. Although this appears unlikely today, we all know how the international political scene can turn on a dime," said Krause.
In the news articles, reported first by the Times of India, and widely circulated in defense media, Brenner was quoted as saying,
"We're also seeing counterfeit routers
and chips, and some of those chips have
made their way into US military fighter
aircraft. You don't sneak counterfeit
chips into another nation's aircraft to
steal data. When it's done
intentionally, it's done to degrade
systems, or to have the ability to do so
at a time of one's choosing."
"Frankly, I am surprised that Brenner's comments have not received wider circulation," states Krause.
"This is a clarion call for a total
review of our current free trade
policies as they relate to national
defense. When I am elected to the US
Senate, I plan to vigorously pursue such
a course."
Bob Krause, a former state legislator who lives at Fairfield, is the only announced candidate for the Democratic nomination for the U. S. Senate seat presently held by Sen. Charles Grassley.
